Mary was born in Salem, the daughter of William C. Endicott, Sr. and Ellen P. Endicott. Mary's father was Secretary of War in President Grover Cleveland's administration. She married Joseph Chamberlain, the famous Birmingham politician in Washington DC on Nov. 26, 1888 and moved to England. As Chamberlain's 3rd wife, she accompanied him on numerous state visits and served as stepmother to his children. After Chamberlain's death in 1914, she married William Hartley Carnegie, Dean of Westminster Abbey and Chaplain to the House of Commons. She was widowed again in 1936 and remained in England until her death.
