Joe Denato

OTTUMWA – Joseph “Joe” Denato, 72, of 133 N. Weller died at 10:08 a.m. March 5, 1996, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

He was born June 29, 1923, in Bucknell to Joseph and Zella May Fox Denato. He married Aleine Chedister on March 2, 1950. They were divorced. He married Lucille Myers on July 14, 1972. She died Nov. 8, 1990.

He served in World War II in Rhineland Central Europe with the 8th Cavalry, receiving the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. A resident of Ottumwa most of his life, he had been an employee of John Deere Ottumwa Works for 30 years before retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Ottumwa Men’s Bowling Association, a charter member of the 700 Bowling Club and a member of the Ottumwa Bowling Hall of Fame.

He is survived by a companion, Marilyn Braham; a son, Craig Denato of Bloomfield; a daughter, Cathy Sipes of Chicago; a granddaughter; two brothers, Eddie Denato of Orlando, Fla., and Jimmy Denato of Ames and four sisters, Bertha Hammer of Des Moines, Lena Schadt of Colona, Ill., and Betty Angerer and Mary Lutz of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Quinto, Johnny, Pete, Willie, Robert, Ronald and Donald Denato, and a sister, Norma Denato.

The service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home, the Rev. Vet Luse officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 of the American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with family present from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Craig Denato. Jack Bennett, Everett Whennen, Dick Crowe, Don Bartlett and George Fuller.

Memorials may be made to Hedrick Christian Church.
