Jesse Sawyer was the son of Jacob & Sarah Sawyer. He grew up in Currituck Co, NC.

Jesse had 5 known siblings:
1. Frederick b. bef 1790 d. 1822, 5 ch
2. Jacob, b. bef 1800 d. bef 8 1819, son Edmund
3. Zephaniah b. bef 1800 untraced
4. Phebe d. bef 8 1819, m. unk Padrick, son Daniel
5. female d. bef 8 1819, m. unk Forbes, dau Nancy

Jesse married Margaret Gibson in NC before 1811. The couple had 4 boys:

1. Jacob 1811, NC - 1880 IL
2. Mark, 1813 NC - 1884 OR, m. 1837 Susannah James 15 ch
3. Jordan, b 1815-21 NC - d before 1850 OR, m. 1835 Frances Forbes, 1 son
4. Enoch, 1816 NC - 1887 IL, m. Elizabeth Broaddus, 10 ch

Jesse was a farmer in NC and IL. In 1830 he and his good friend Caleb Forbes went by horseback searching for new lands for their family to settle on. The picked good land in Marshall Co, IL. Land that would not be subject to the flooding like their lands in Currituck Co, NC. In 1832 the families left NC by wagon for a 5 month trip to Marshall Co, IL. The Forbes & Sawyers were very close. The Sawyers raised pigs for market. The Forbes raised cattle.

Indians were still present and causing problems. While none of the Forbes or Sawyers were killed there were close calls.

13 years later Jesse and his son Mark & Jordan were in Yamhill, OR. The sons wanted the opportunities of new land.

As the story goes, in 1849 Jesse (almost 66) was on a ship going to find gold in San Francisco when he became ill and died. He was buried at sea but his wife had a marker installed in the family cemetery to memorialize Jesse.
