Beautiful Mary Mathilda McNamara Becker was the oldest child of Michael and Emily McNamara. She married John Carl Becker, but shortly after she gave birth to her first and only child, she died in the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918. Our country had forgotten how terrible that epidemic was. It struck young adults and killed them within a day or two. So many people died so rapidly that In some towns the dead were piled up on porches
Mary's obit indicates that her funeral services were held at the home of her parents, no funeral mass was said, unheard of for Catholics, but the epidemic must have been the cause. The death rate was enormous and churches, funeral homes and graveyards were overwhelmed.
Mary could not have known then, but hopefully does now, that her child would grow up to be a wonderful man, father and grandfather. Mary now rests with her son, Bernard, and his wife. It is so good they could be together again.
(Mary is my great aunt and my name is Mary McNamara too)
