Lockwood was born in Virginia three years before the state of West Virginia was formed. His father, Nelson, was one of three boys and 12 girls from the Proctor area. His mother was referred to by several names in various censuses: Lavinia, Elvina, Louvina, Levina and Melvina. I do not know which one is correct. Her parents were Richard Cook and Rachel Garrison. His brother, Luther, was also born in March. I wonder if they were twins?
Lockwood and his wife, Alta Jane Cox Garner and their two children, resided in the Fanlight area of Proctor. My grandfather, Lockwood's son, Harold, says that much later Lockwood and a carpenter friend, Abner Howell, owned a store on North St. in New Martinsville. From what my grandfather told me, the store seemed to be a combination hardware and furniture store. Lockwood taught his son about woodwork and cabinet making and also instilled in Harold a love of learning. Unfortunately, Lockwood came down with meningitis, a disease which destroyed his brain within days and then proved fatal. The family was devastated by his loss.
I found his grave way up on a ridge, ca. 12 miles east of NM. It is somewhat near the Joshua Garner farm area and Antioch Cemetery, where Lockwood undoubtedly grew up. Note the book on top of the monument, perhaps to indicate the Bible or the importance of the education that he and Alta wanted for Harold.
