Poet and publisher, born in Roxburghshire and educated at Edinburgh University. He became Commissioner of the Public Records of Scotland, and, in 1817, co-editor of the 'Edinburgh Monthly Magazine' and the 'Constable's Magazine'. Two years later he published a volume of poetry 'The Autumnal Excursion'. A year later he moved to South Africa and became Government Librarian at Cape Town. By 1824 he had become co-editor of the 'South African Commercial Advertiser'. In 1826 he moved back to London and served as Secretary to the Anti-Slavery Society until his death on December 5, 1834. His other work includes 'George Thompson's Travels and Adventures', 'Ephemerides' and 'African Sketches'. Samuel Taylor Coleridge informed Pringle that his poem 'Afar in the Desert' was one of the 'two or three most perfect lyric Poems' in English.
