Another Old Soldier Gone: After a sojourn on earth of more than eighty two years, the pioneer veteran, Henry Elliott, closed his stay here last Monday evening and the spirit taking flight to realms eternal. Gradually as the years have passed the body has grown weaker, and as each winter closed in it was a question whether there would be strength sufficient to withstand the demands of the cold until another summer would come. He has ever been a happy spirit, magnifying his opportunities rather than complaining of his seeming troubles and it is with universal sadness that the townspeople became aware that he will be with us no more. Henry Elliott was born in County Wicklow Ireland near Dublin July 12, 1824. He came to Toronto, Canada in 1848 and there wedded Miss Jane Willoughby in 1852. Two years later they moved to Postville, Wisconsin where they located on a farm. Here too they allied themselves with the Methodist church, and from that time on from the family which begin to grow in numbers was reared under Christian influence, and Mr. Elliott became one of the pillars of the church. In February of 1865, he was mustered into service in Company I, 42nd regiment of Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and served until the close of the war, much of the time with General Sherman. He was one of the few soldiers who faithfully kept his Christian faith and studiously read his Bible during the trying times of army life and the dark days of the Rebellion. In the Spring of 1875, Mr. and Mrs. Elliott and their family moved to Lincoln County and took up a homestead eight miles northeast of where Beresford is now located. To Mr. and Mrs. Elliott, ten children were born, eight are now living. They are Mrs. George Sinclair, Mrs. A. P. Van Voorhis, Henry, George, and John of Beresford, Mrs. Ingham of Midland of this state, and Mrs. Lida Schaetzel, and Mrs. Judith Plaunt of Denver. In December, fourteen years ago the faithful wife and mother, passed away, and since that time Mr. Elliott has passed much of this time with his children. Funeral services were held yesterday in the M.E. Church, Rev. W. O. Red held the preaching and the sermon and the remains were laid to rest in the Zion Cemetery. Thus another veteran has been mustered out of lifes great realm. Info per Beresford Republic newspaper. Henry Elliott passed from Acute Nephritis and Cystitis per death cert, State of South Dakota 1907.
