Maria Buckingham was born in either Clermont or Hamilton County, Ohio. Her parents were Benjamin & Margaret (Elliott) Buckingham. The family moved from Ohio by 1847.

Tragically most members of Maria's family died young. One of her sisters in 1848, her father in 1851, then in May of 1853 Maria & her last sibling were taken.
