John was a merchant and manufacturer - the founder of Cowan's Cocoa & Chocolate Factory on Sterling Rd. Toronto, Ontario.

His parents were Edmund Cowan and Tryphena Clark.He married Isabella Dimmock on 28 March 1867 in Montreal.

John went to school at Princeton Ont. and completed his education at a commercial college in London Ont. In 1856 worked as a clerk in a Princeton grocery store, before heading back to London as a clerk for a wholesale grocery firm after eight years. He then moved to Montreal, where he became a traveller for wholesale tea dealer John Duncan and Company. In 1876 he relocated to Toronto and started a wholesale tea and coffee firm of John W. Cowan and Company.

In 1885 he bought the equipment of a failed firm and established Cowan, Musgrave and Company, expanding to sell cocoa and chocolate. In 1890, a partner John A. Wood, he created the Cowan Cocoa and Chocolate Company of Toronto Limited. The company’s name was changed to the Cowan Company Ltd in 1893.

His son Herbert Norton took over the company after his death until 1926.
