He met and started dating his future wife, a fine Irish woman named Gertrude Clancey, in 1938. In the fall of 1940, he moved to Detroit to get work in the auto industry. He returned in February 1941 to marry Gertrude at Saint Peter's in Marquette on the 25th of that month. Then they both settled in Detroit. They had a son and then built a home in Dearborn Township where they had their second child, a daughter. In 1956, he and Gertrude became founding members of Saint Linus Church; where he later worked as their maintenance man.
Gus and Gertrude lived in Dearborn Township (later named Dearborn Heights) for the remainder of their lives.
Gus was an avid fisherman and hunter and he enjoyed Tiger baseball.
