John Gibson Phillips, Sr. was the son of Frank Phillips and Jane "Betsie" (Gibson) Phillips and grandson of Lewis "Lew" Franklin Phillips and Lucinda Josephine "Josie" (Faucett) Phillips and John Ebbert Gibson and Matilda "Tillie" Jane (Martin) Gibson.

John Gibson Phillips, Sr. married Mildred Beattie on 01 MAR 1917 in Kansas City, Missouri, and later Mary Kate (Black) Hundley from South Carolina, widow of Dr. Morton E. Hundley from Virginia, on 03 JAN 1933, at the Marble Collegiate Church in New York City by Rev. Norman Vincent Peale.

John Gibson Phillips, Sr. and Mildred (Beattie) Phillips were the parents of four children:

1) John Gibson Phillips, Jr., husband of Shirlee Evans.

2) Betty Phillps, wife of Major Henry "Hank" D. Irwin.

3) Robert Beattie Phillips [a twin].

4) Infant Son Phillips [a twin].

John Gibson Phillips, Sr. died of a heart attack enroute to the United States from Spain aboard the ship, the Queen Mary.
