Obituary - James Ezra "Cream" Steele died at home in his sleep Thursday, May 20, 1993. He was 92-years-old.
He was born July 30, 1900 in Ogden, Utah to David Frank and Martha Hadfield Steele, the youngest of seven children. It was while helping in his father's grocery store that he acquired the nickname, "Cream", due to his inclination to scoop and eat the residual cream from the separating pans commonly used in those days to separate the cream from the milk.
Upon graduation from high school, he fulfilled a mission the Eastern States Mission (Philadelphia) for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
After a brief sojourn in Los in Angeles in the early 1920's, he moved to Salt Lake City where he was employed by the U.S. Rubber Company. He married Marian Morris. They had one child, Anne, and were later divorced.
IN 1935, he married Caroline Cannon Whitney and that same year started his own roofing contracting business, which he owned and operated fro 35 years. It was very successful, largely due to the dedication and honesty he brought to every job he did. In 1970, he sold his business to his friend and long-time business associate, Carl B. Paulsen, who thereafter operated as Paulsen-Steele Roofing Company. After the sale, he continued to work for the successor company until his total retirement in 1980.
He was a member of the Alta Club, where he served as a director and president; a member of the Salt Lake Country Club, where he also served as a director and president; and a member of the Eldorado Country Club in Indian Wells, California. He was a member of the Salt Lake Rotary Club and was active in professional organizations associated with his business.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline; and is survived by his daughter, Anne S. Parker and her husband Norton; his step son, Hardin A. Whitney and his wife Beverly; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Evans & Early Mortuary, 574 East 100 South, SLC, on Monday, May 24, 1993, at 2 p.m. Friends may call at the mortuary one hour prior to services. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
