Born on Dec. 30, 1937, in Richmond, Va., he was the son of the late George William Key and Martha Pickett Key. His sister, Martha Florence Key, preceded him in death.
Mr. Key began school in Anderson, moved to Greenville in 1946, and graduated from Greenville High School in 1956. He graduated from Furman University in 1960 with a bachelor of fine arts degree. Further studies included master painting courses at the University of Mexico, Mexico City.
Mr. Key was co-founder and president of Washington House on East Washington Street, Greenville's first gourmet restaurant. He was the owner of William Key Interiors until his recent retirement.
Bill Key had an amazing gift, his gift of design, color, concept, and vision. He shared this gift with all who met him. His humor, laughter, and all of his wonderful stories will never be forgotten. Bill designed not for us but for every client and friend he ever met. To pay tribute to one so talented is humbling to all of us.
Bill Key's talents were featured in Southern Accents, Southern Living and Architectural Digest. His beloved mountain home, as well as his childhood home in Greenville, were among the many published.
His cousins, Marian Brewer of Apopka, Fla., Cornelia McCraw of Mount Pleasant, Anne and George Nelson of Awendaw, Les and Mary Earle McCraw of Greenville, Elizabeth and Fletcher Stone of Charlotte, N.C., Chesley and Lee Milam of Sandy Springs, and Lucille Wright of Greenville, survive Mr. Key.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Greenville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the River Falls Volunteer Fire Department, 602 River Falls Road, Marietta, SC 29661; or to the charity of one's choice.
