He was born in Stippshausen, Rheinland-Pfalz. He immigrated arriving in New York City aboard the Cerro Gordo with his sister Catherine. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the 54th Regiment, Company A. He was married first to Anna Maria Gerhardt, and after her death to Anna Maria Schultz. He moved back and forth between Scranton and Altoona, with some of his children having been born in each place. He finally settled in Altoona, where he died.
