George T. Colgate of Canon City, Colo., passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, Aug. 28, 2015, after 92 years on this planet. George T. Colgate George was the last survivor of nine children born to Albert B. and Lillian (Geraghty) Colgate of Canon City, Colo. George graduated from Canon City High School in 1941 and joined the Army to serve his country in World War II. He was severely wounded in December 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. The Army sent word home to his family that he had been killed in action. But thanks to God’s mercy, he survived and went on to raise a wonderful family and contribute overwhelmingly to his community. He was active in the Boy Scouts, YMCA, Masonic Lodge, local historical groups, NRA, Red Cross and numerous other civic groups. George graduated from Colorado A&M in Fort Collins, where he met his wife, Vera (Boulton) Colgate. He worked in the mining business in Denver, Uravan, Leadville and Canon City. In 1955, George moved his family to Miami, Ariz., where he continued to work in the mining industry until his retirement from Cities Service Co. (Miami Copper Co.) in the early 1980s. In 1985, George moved back to the Colorado mountains he had always loved. George is survived by his three children, Sandy Miller, Ken Colgate and Jim Colgate; and their mother, Vera Colgate; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 24 nieces and nephews and scores of other relatives.
