Bill (O.W.) Colgate died July 22, 2012 at his home in Canon City after a short illness. He was 91 years of age. In 1946, Bill married Mable Wolff of Silver Cliff, CO, who survives. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert, Richard, James, Donald, sisters Helen (Dent), Nell (Fisher), and Lois (Fontana), as well as his son Bobby (Robert). He is survived by his wife Mable, daughters Sharon (Wilson), Patricia (Stuckey), Peggy (Colgate), son-in-law Jeff Stuckey, grandsons Robert Wilson, Brian Wilson, Paul Stuckey, granddaughter Amy Stuckey, and his younger brother George Colgate of Canon City, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
He was born July 22, 1921 in Canon City, Colorado to Albert B. Colgate and Lillian (Geraghty) Colgate. His great, great grandfather was Benjamin Griffin who homesteaded what is now South Canon. Bill passed away on his birthday in the house where he was born, built by his grandfather George E. Colgate for his grandmother Nellie (Griffin) Colgate. Bill Colgate attended grade school and junior high schools in Canon City and graduated from Canon City High School with the class of 1939.
He served overseas with the United States Air Force during World War II in the China-Burma-India theatre. Following WWII, he worked in mines in the Silver Cliff area, and was a trustee of the town of Silver Cliff in 1948. He then attended Colorado State University where he obtained a degree in Agronomy. He worked for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in the Flagler, Ft. Lupton and Brighton, Colorado areas for over 30 years. He retired from the Soil Conservation Service in 1979 and returned to Canon City.
Bill Colgate was a member of AARP, and a life member of Elks Lodge 610, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In retirement he enjoyed working in his yard and orchard, working at his mountain property in the Sangre De Cristo mountains, fishing, and visiting with friends and relatives. Bill's wishes were for immediate cremation with no services. A memorial for friends and family will be held at a later date. Cremation is through Imperial Funeral Home, Pueblo (www.imperialfunerals.com). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Colorado 4-H Foundation (www.co4hfoundation.colostate.edu), the Wounded Warriors Foundation (www.woundedwarriorproject.org), the WWII Veterans Foundation (http://wwiifoundation.org), or any local FFA (Future Farmer's of America) scholarship or other local charity of one's choice.
