Sam Barbaro, 78, of 1013 N. Johnson, Marion, died at 12:10 pm Monday, January 19, 1976 at the Fountain Nursing Home. He was the owner and operator of the South Side Tavern for 47 years until it was destroyed by fire in 1962. The business was later rebuilt and was renamed the Planters Restaurant which was owned and operated by he and his two sons. He had belonged to the Italian Army in World War I. Services will be Wednesday at the Wilson Funeral Home with the Rev. Clark E. Short officiating and burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
He was born November 17, 1897 in Locri, Italy to Pasquale and Marie Romeo Barbaro. Survivors include two sons; Pat and Frank Barbaro of Marion, four grandchildren, Gregory Allen of Marion, Beth Ann Barbaro of Marion and Girard and Steven Barbaro of Chicago. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
