A polio survivor who contracted the disease at the age of 10, Butch learned to walk again with the aid of crutches and braces, and was active in wheelchair basketball competition well into his thirties. He was a graduate from Centralia High School, attended the University of Illinois and had a long career as an electrical draftsman and estimator with a number of companies in Springfield, Illinois and St. Louis, Missouri before happily retiring to Staunton with his wife in 2009. He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus District 2197. With an excellent memory and superior recall of geography and history, Butch loved to read and was an avid bingo player.
