Abraham Bernstein was one of the pioneer settlers in Schoharie County. He came from Germany via Philadelphia and after marrying Eva Ann Young, of Carlisle, NY, conducted a village store in Carlisle for many years. Abraham and Eve Ann had 4 children, Edward, Flora, Charles and Benjamin, and died when their son, Charles Bernstein was a very young child, but the father left a small sum to be used for the education of the son. For a short time after the death of the parents, the family was kept together by the older son (Edward, who married Celia Miner) and daughter (Flora, who married Menzo McNeil) with the aid of a housekeeper and their maternal uncle, Madison Young, (never married) who was the village school teacher and an extremely severe disciplinarian. There was also another son, Benjamin, who migrated west when he was young and was never reunited with his birth family.
