Martin Joseph Kessler Jr. of Rockvale passed away on July 30, 2010, after fighting a courageous and lengthy battle against cancer. He was born to Martin J. and Basilia E. (Herrman) Kessler on July 28, 1951, in Canon City, CO.

Martin lived most of his life in Rockvale and attended grade school there and then later attended school in Florence, where he graduated with the class of 1971. While attending Florence High School he also drove the school bus.

Martin married Lucille M. Langloss on November 29, 1975, and a son, Keith A. Kessler was born to this marriage. Martin married Jayne M. Rhodes on April 25, 1998, and they shared their special love and common interests for 12 wonderful years.

Martin was employed by the town of Rockvale for over 30 years as their town maintenance man and the town's water superintendent as he was certified with A WWA, so he provided all paperwork and water tests for the town that were required by the state. His job consisted of many facets, he was their mechanic, carpenter, electrician, plumber, parks director and road and bridge man. Whatever the town needed done, Martin was right on the spot to get it done, he went above and beyond the call of duty to do whatever his job required. He held his job position from 1979, up until the time of his death, except for a period of about a year when he worked for the water department in Coffeyville, Kansas.

Martin was a volunteer fireman for the town of Rockvale for 22 years, a job he enjoyed, but had to give up when he was diagnosed with cancer. Martin is responsible for the drawing of a map for the town, that shows where all the water lines, mains, valves and shutoffs are, including the fire hydrants. Martin refurbished the smaller schoolhouse in Rockvale, which is now used as their community room, as well as putting in the town park. Rockvale residents will surely miss Martin and all that he contributed to the town over the past 30 years as he was dedicated to his job and he truly cared about all the residents in the Rockvale community.

Martin was honored in June of 2010 by the mayor and council of Rockvale with a bronze plaque for his 30 plus years of service, that plaque now hangs at the entrance of the town hall for his dedicated service to the town of Rockvale. Martin enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing with his collection of toy trains, but most of all he enjoyed his family and especially his grandsons and a new baby granddaughter whom he dearly loved and was so very proud of. Martin will be truly missed by all his family and friends and everyone that knew and loved him.

Martin was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Langloss; his parents; brothers, Gilbert and Leroy Kessler; sisters, Lucille Costello and Thersia Bullock; brothers-in-law, Donald Jones, Chester Costello and Franklin Bullock; and special nephew, Gilbert Kessler Jr. that had lived for awhile with Martin.

Martin is survived by his beloved wife, Jayne; son, Keith (Kelli) Kessler of Rockvale; stepson, Stanley (Andrea) Rhodes of Huntsville, Ala.; grandson, Kasen Kessler of Rockvale; step-grandsons, Justin & Alexander Rhodes of Huntsville; granddaughter Kynlee Kessler; brothers, Aloysious (Helen) Kessler, Phillip (Naomi) Kessler, of Rockvaleand Virgil (Gloria) Kessler of Ozark, Ark.; sisters, Helen (Clarence) Spurgeon of LaHarpe, Kansas, Bernadine Jones of Waynesville, N.C. and Joan (Bill) Worthen of Caon City; sister-in-law, Della Kessler of Coal Creek and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel in Caon City. Funeral and Word Service will begin at 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 4, 2010, also at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, with interment following at Union Highland Cemetery in Florence, Colorado.

Memorial donations may be made to the Martin J. Kessler Scholarship Fund through the funeral home. Arrangements are handled through Holt Family Florence Historic Funeral Home.
