George Riley Bales was born in Conkeytown, Illinois to John William Bales and wife Annar Marie Meade. He married Carrie Faurote on Jan. 19, 1893 and they were the parents of three children: Verla Ann (Bales) Daugherty, Preston Bales, and Glenn D. Bales. He was preceded in death by brothers John Wesley Bales, Andrew Jackson Bales, Joshua Bales and Nathaniel Lincoln Bales; and by two sisters, Maryetta Bales and Sarah Edith Bales. One sister, Ida May Dayton of Momence, survived him.

The Decatur Herald ran a notice of death for Glenn D. Bales on July 8, 1926. He was born at Clarksburg Dec. 8, 1903, and died at his parents' home of a protracted illness with a complication of illnesses on July 2, 1926.
