John Wesley Bales was born in Conkeytown, three miles SW of Muncie in Vermilion County, Illinois. He married first Margaret J. Casteel on November 25, 1875 in Vermilion County. Margaret was the daughter of Allen and Martha Jane Casteel. John and Margaret had one child, a daughter named Minnie E. Margaret died in 1901 and was buried in Stearns Cemetery in Oakwood. John married next Cora Bell Jobe, the daughter of Chase Jobe and Nancy E. Meadows of Barren County, Kentucky. After Cora Bell died in 1935, John took up residence with his niece Nellie Budnovich in Danville.

Ex-Contractor Succumbs at 81 John W. Bales, Life Resident of County Formerly of Fithian, Dead
John W. Bales, 81, retired carpenter contractor of Fithian and life Vermilion county resident, died at 10:30 P.M. Monday, Feb. 3, 1936 at home of a niece Mrs. Nellie Budnovich, 509 Ann Street, following a four weeks illness. Born in Conkeytown, south of Muncie, April 13, 1854, Mr. Bales was a son of John W. and Anner Meade Bales. He spent most of his life in Fithian, building most of the buildings that were constructed there during a period of nearly 50 years. He moved to Danville 13 years ago and since that time had made his home with Mrs. Budnovich. Surviving besides Mrs. Budnovich is one daughter, Miss Minnie E. Bales, Momence. He was a member of Modern Woodmen Lodge and Fithian M.E. Church. The body was taken to Edmund & Dickson Funeral Home where services will be 2:30 P.M. Wednesday, the Rev. E.M. Norton officiating. Burial in Stearns Cemetery, Fithian.
