Mrs. Elizabeth Chambers, wife of well-known Trenton merchant, Alexander Chambers, resided at the corner of what is now State and Willow street in Trenton. She was part of a committee of women who organized the reception of Gen. George Washington on his way to New York City to be sworn in as President of the United States.
