From Return of Death, City of Charleston, SC: James McDermot was a 23-year-old white male who died of "fever and cough" on November 9, 1853. He was born in Ireland and resided in Charleston at the time of his death. He was buried at St. Lawrence.
The following is from the 1850 census. I'm not sure this is the same man but all information matches. In 1850, James lived in the 8th Ward of New York, New York. He was born in Ireland in 1830. Other people in the home were Maria McDermot, born 1801 in New York; John McDermot, born 1827 in Ireland; Thomas McDermot, born 1828 in Ireland; and Edward McDermot, born 1833 in Ireland. There was a 29-year-old woman named Margaret Dalton, born 1821 in Ireland but it doesn't give her relationship. In fact, the census doesn't give anyone's relationship or their race or marital status.
