Fred Baker
Fred Baker, virtually a lifelong resident of the Townville vicinity and well-known in a five-county area as a cattle-dealer, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Donald Case, at Edinboro at 4 p.m. yesterday. He had been seriously ill for three days. He had made his home with the daughter, for three and a half years. Mrs. Baker, the former Gertie Shorts, died on July 8, 1944. Mr. Baker was born in Steuben township.
As a dealer in livestock he was known in Crawford, Erie, Warren, Mercer and Forest counties. He was rated as an outstanding judge in estimating individual cattle weights or in truckload lots. Many farmers with whom he dealings often preferred his estimates in preference to going to the trouble of using scales. It has been said that Mr. Baker could tell the weight of a truckload of cattle to within a relatively few pounds.
Besides Mrs. Case, the deceased leaves two children, Mrs. E.H. Harris of Townville and Harold L. Baker of Youngstown. Eleven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren survive. A son, Donald, died on June 28, 1939.
Friends will be received at the BC. Kiehl funeral home at Edinboro until Friday at 11 a.m. The body will then be brought to the Baptist church at Townville where friends may call... Interment will be in Greenlawn cemetery at Townville.
