Motion Picture Producer. He was born in Jarosław, Austria-Hungary (now Poland). He fled Germany when Adolf Hitler rose to power. Along with David O. Selznick, he was the epitome of Hollywood producers, in fact the Producer's producer. He won the Academy Award for Best Picture for Elia Kazan's "On The Waterfront" and a further two times for his two collaborations with British director David Lean, "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957) and "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962). In 1963, he was awarded the prestigious Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award at that year's Academy Awards for his many contributions to cinema. Sometimes he was credited as S.P. Eagle. His famous works include "The Stranger" (1946), "The African Queen" (1951), "Suddenly Last Summer" (1959), "Nicholas and Alexandra" (1971) and "The Last Tycoon" (1976). He died in St. Martin, Channel Island, United Kingdom.
