Josiah Hensel was born, August 9, 1825 in York Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

At the relatively advanced age of 39 years, Josiah Hensel enlisted as a private on May 2, 1864. On May 9th, he was mustered into Co. D, 161st Ohio Infantry, a 100-day regiment.
On July 25th, Josiah Hensel was admitted to the field hospital at Sandy Hook, Maryland, suffering from chronic diarrhea. He was transferred to Jarvis Field Hospital in Baltimore, with rheumatism, and thence to Cincinnati on August 23rd, to be mustered out. He was mustered out with the rest of his regiment at Camp Chase on September 2, 1864.

He passed away April 13, 1919, at the respectable age of 93 years, 8 months, and 4 days.

COUNTY'S OLDEST WAR VETERAN IS CLAIMED SUNDAY .Josiah Hensel , 94, believed to be the county's oldest Civil War veteran, died Sunday at 1:30 a.m. Infirmities of old age extending over a period of two years, resulted in his death. Mr. Hensel's death occurred at his home on West Front Street, he had lived in New Philadelphia for 45-years. He was born in Oldtown Valley and lived there during his boyhood. He removed there later in life after having resided in Buckhorn Valley and in Stone Creek Valley. Before removing to New Philadelphia, he lived on his farm in Oldtown Valley. His term of service in the Civil War was cut short by rheumatism, for which he was sent to a military hospital in Annapolis, Md. He enlisted in 1864 in the state militia. Upon the call of President Lincoln, he with his comrades in the state guards joined the federal army. He was assigned to Co. D, 161st Ohio Infantry. He served four months. He did duty in Maryland and Virginia. His disabilities caused him to return home on crutches. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. William Stocksdale, Huntington, Ind.; Alvin D. Hensel, Detroit, Mich.; John. Hensel, South Whitley, Ind: Mrs. Howard Thompson, Huntington, Ind.: Charles Hensel, Marion, Ind.: Mrs. Charles Woodworth, Canton, OH, and Miss Alice Hensel, at home. Mr. Hensel was married twice. His first wife died in March 1872, The wife of his second marriage died in March,1918. Two of the children, Miss Alice and Mrs. Charles Woodworth, Canton, were of the second marriage. The other children were of the first. Two brothers, Elisha Hensel, Huntington, Indiana and Alvin Hensel, Omaha. Nebraska and a sister, Mrs. David Forney. Blicktown, also survive. He belonged to Andrew Crawford Post. G.A.R., and to the Christian Church. The funeral was held Tuesday at 1 p.rn., from the home. Rev. A F. Shriver officiated. Burial was made in East Fairstreet Cemetery.
