Emily (Riley) Duke was born about 1821 in Virginia. She was the first wife of Washington Duke and they were probably married in Virginia since their first children were born there. Known children of Emily are:

• Elizabeth born abt 1846 born Virginia
• Mary 'Polly' born abt 1848 born Virginia
• John born abt 1851 born Ohio
• Jane (or Jennie) born abt 1853 born Ohio
• James born abt 1854 born Ohio
• William born abt 1857 born Illinois
• Charles born abt 1859 born Illinois
• George W. born abt 1861 born Illinois

1850 US Census Washington and Emily Duke first show up in Hocking County, Ohio. Washington can not read and write.

By 1860 they are in Christy Township, Lawrence County, IL near Post Office: Bridgeport

In 1870 they are still in Christy Township, Lawrence County, IL but the Post Office is now Sumner and both Washington and Emily are designated as unable to read and write and none of the children are attending school.

In 1880 they are living in Bridgeport village, Lawrence County, IL and Emily is recorded as ELIZA. Only their youngest, George, is at home and attending school.
