s.s. Cabotia's final journey began 9th October 1916 departing from Montreal, Canada, bound for Manchester with "5000 tons of cargo and 300 horses". The "Cabotia" was located and pursued by SMS U-69 through stormy seas. On the 20th October, the U-Boat, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Ernst Wilhelms, was close enough to successfully torpedo the "Cabotia". Master John Mitchell gave the order to abandon ship and despite the rough seas the crew successfully launched 4 lifeboats (74 men) which due to the weather conditions immediately dispersed - only 2 lifeboats were recovered.
