Italian Nobility. Marquise of Ferrara. She was born in Mantova as the fifth child of Marchese Gianfrancesco I Gonzaga and his wife, Paola Malatesta. In 1435, she was married to Leonello, the illegitimate son of Niccolo III d'Este, to strengthen the ties between the two families. The marriage was characterized by their common love for science and art. She gave birth to a son in 1438 and never fully recovered her health. She suffered for nearly a year before she passed away. Despite Leonello's remarriage, her son remained his only child.
