Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 29 Jan 1880 p3: "Among the biographical sketches of the members of the Senate and House of Representatives of Maine, compiled by Howard Owen, Esq., of Augusta, the following appear among the list from this county:...HOUSE---...Jewett, Edward, Sangerville. Republican, Congregationalist, farmer, married; age 74. Born in Solon, and educated in the district schools. Sheriff of county ten years. Moved to Sangerville November 1st, 1836. Went to California in the fall of 1851; returned in the fall of 1853. His oldest son enlisted in the 6th Maine Regiment in April, 1861. Caught his death cold in the Virginia swamps, died in the old Pennsylvania hospital, July 14, 1862; brought his remains to Sangerville. One enlisted in the 8th Maine, and another in the 2nd Maine Cavalry, remaining in the army until after Lee's surrender, and are now living. Formerly a whig."
