Actor. He was an English actor, comedian, and writer, who was best-known, starting in 1936 on stage, then film and television, for the children comedic role of "Mr. Pastry." Starting in 1934, he had bit parts in several films, but popularity began after his television roles in 1951. He performed on BBC TV for thirty years, having his own shows with nearly 70 episodes as "Mr. Pastry." For the first of thirteen appearances, he was a guest on American television, the "Ed Sullivan Show," in 1954. Though filmed in 1955, Buster Keaton appeared with him on June 21, 1958 in the pilot episode of "The Adventures of Mr. Pastry." He is credited with writing at least 30 episodes of "Mr. Pastry." In 1976 for three episodes, he appeared as "Mr. Pastry" on the BBC's old time music hall show, "The Good Old Days. He was given the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth in 1970.
