Father of Saint Maria Teresa Goretti, Luigi Goretti was born on Saturday, February 26, 1859 in Corinaldo, Italy.

His mother was Teresa Antonio Mazzoli-Goretti and she and her husband, Luigi's father were both from Ostra Vetere, Italy.

At age 15, Luigi lost his mother in 1874 and just nine years later in 1883, his father died.

He married Assunta Carlini on February 5, 1885. Luigi was a person who was dedicated to work and his family. He was tenacious and concrete and at the end of 1896 he decided to emigrate with his family to the Pontine Marshes in Italy.

Together Luigi had seven children with Assunta in the following order: Antonio, Angelo, Saint Maria Teresa, Mariano, Alessandro, Ersilia and Teresa. Their first born son Antonio died as an infant.

In the Spring of 1900, Luigi felt strange and a doctor diagnosed him with three diseases ~ malaria, pneumonia and meningitis.

After 10 days of being diagnosed, on Sunday, May 6, 1900, Luigi Goretti died leaving an his wife and children.

He was buried in the cemetery of Conca, which today is Borgo. Unfortunately, his tomb cannot be found. There is a votive plaque which was built by an American officer, who claims to have received a pardon for his intercession and a photograph of the authentic military uniform he wore at the age of 21.
