Sarah was the youngest child of Jacques Henri and Maria Elizabeth Merkling Heyd of Germany/France with siblings: Catherine, Frederick, Jacques, Mary, Elizabeth, Philip, and Magdalene. She married Amos Clark on 5 October 1856 in Ashland County. She had seven children with 4 surviving: Mary Elizabeth (1857-1913), Jessie Elfie ( 1859-1864), Emma Frances (1862-1864), William Wallace (1866-1867), Henry Wadsworth (1868-1932), John Burnett (1870-1954), and Harriet Fern (1887-1961). Sarah died from mitral deficiency at the age of 80 years 2 months and 16 days.
