"Last Saturday morning at an early hour the death of Mrs. Sarah Ann Preston, wife of Colonel James Preston occurred at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Carew B. Preston at Bal Alton, East Radford, after prolonged illness resulting from a paralytic stroke four years ago.
The deceased was in her 82 nd year and was the daughter of Hugh Caperton of Union West Virginia which was then a part of Virginia, a brother of Allen T. Caperton who was a member of the Confederate Congress and at whose home she was married to James Preston, who commanded the Fourth Virginia Regiment, Stonewall Brigade. He also came of a prominent and aristocratic family, his father James B. Preston having been the governor of Virginia and his uncle, the Hon. Ballard Preston, Secretary of the Navy.
Mrs. Preston came with her husband to "White Thorn" the beautiful old Preston estate, near Blacksburg, where she lived until moving to Radford, about fifteen years ago. She had three sons, James, who died in childhood; William Ballard and Captain Hugh Preston both deceased. In her years of invalidism she has been very tenderly cared for by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Hugh Preston, with whom she has made her home for years. .
Mrs. Preston was a woman of great strength of character and very great sweetness of disposition and a devoted Christian. She was for a long time president of the Ladies Aid Society of the Central Presbyterian Church and honorary president up to the time of her death. .
Mrs. Preston was an aunt of Edward Echols, of Staunton, ex-lieutenant governor of Virginia and Harry Caperton of Charleston, West Virginia. She is the last of a family of eleven. .
The funeral services were held in the Central Presbyterian Church of which Mrs. Preston was a member on Monday morning last at 9:30 o‟clock, conducted by the Pastor Rev. L.W. Irewin and assisted by Rev. D. Campbell Mayers. .
The pall bearers were Messrs. D. Taylor Martin, Mr. Breckenridge, G.T. Beamer, H.P. Anderson, H.D. Tyler and Captain John Howe. .
After the services the funeral party left for Blacksburg where the interment took place at the family burying ground at Smithfield."
