John Alexander Caperton was a Texas Ranger. He was one of Colonel John Coffee Hays' picked men and served in the Mexican War. He followed Hays to California in 1849, and served under him as a deputy sheriff in San Francisco. He made his home in Oakland California. So great was his friendship with Hays, that he named his firstborn son after him. On one of the expeditions with Hays, they discovered a route between El Paso and San Antonio, Texas that became the Chihuahua Trail.
