Lucille McIlveen was married to Herbert O. Birkness and had three children: Denise, Daryl and Brian.

Both Herb and Lucille were raised in the Bawlf district of Alberta. The family moved in 1949 from Rimbey to Cayley following Herb's appointment as Agent at Alberta Wheat Pool No. 1.

Lucille was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and Women's Institute.
