The middle daughter of William Leo Hayden and Susan Catherine Abell, Marietta was raised in a traditional Catholic household, and entered the convent at an early age. After devoting her life to the Church for many years and teaching as a nun at St Ann's Church and School in Lexington, Kentucky, she ultimately left the habit to marry, but remained a devout, practicing Catholic until she died.

Marietta married Harold Charles Ryle, Sr at the age of 28, on 23 Sep 1924. Her husband had been married twice before, both of his wives and an infant child dying too young. Together, Marietta and Charles had two children who lived to adulthood:
Harold Charles Ryle, Jr (1925-2005)
Marie A Ryle (1929- )
