Benton - Anton C. Thomann, 88, died at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003 at the Casey Care Center, Mt. Vernon. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Steve Poole officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton. Mr. Thomann was born Aug. 20, 1914 in St. Louis, MO, the son of Anthony and Louise (Weingaertner) Thomann. He married the former Roberta Webb McAfoos on Jan. 15, 1949 and she preceded him in death on Nov. 2, 1972. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Benton. Following World War II, Anton moved to Centralia, IL and become a partner in the family Nash car dealership. In 1954 he and his wife Roberta moved to Benton and operated Thomann's Garage with his father and brother. He retired in the early 1990's and sold his garage in 1999 to the City of Benton who transformed it into the Franklin County Garage Museum. He is survived by two daughters, Jan and husband Darrell Compton, Benton, Diana and husband David Burlison, Dallas, GA, three grandchildren, Stephen and wife Tracy Burlison, Columbia, SC, Ryan Burlison and fiancé Paula Miles, Columbia, SC, Michael Compton and fiancé Karen Bohn, Sarasota, FL, two brothers, Albert and wife Mary Beth Thomann, Danville, IL, William and wife Mary Ann Thomann, Columbia, MO, two sisters-in-law, Katherine Thomann, Benton, Ruth Thomann, Englewood, CO, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Thomann was predeceased by his parents, wife, two brothers, Henry and Carl Thomann, and one sister, Agnes Wagner. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Catholic Church or the Franklin County Garage Museum and will be accepted at the funeral home.
