William emigrated to America in 1772 and settled in Philadelphia. After the Revolutionary War, he moved to Maryland and settled in Monkton. William owned and operated the Monkton Mill. He also owned property in Baltimore. He is buried at the St. James Church on My Lady's Manor. William had no children. In his 1819 will, he left half his property to his wife and the other half to his nephew John Gwynn, Jr. He also left money to his various nieces and to their children.
