Baptized Strood, Kent, 24 May 1618, son of John and Elizabeth (Stoughton) Scudder. Came from Strood, Kent, to Massachusetts Bay in 1635 on the "James." (On 19 June 1635, "Jo[hn] Scudder," aged 16, was enrolled at London as a passenger for London on the James). First settled in Charlestown; moved to Barnstable by 1643. Died before 15 April 1690 (settlement of estate).
Married by about 1644 Hannah _____. She was living on 15 April 1690.
John Scudder was the brother of Hannah Scudder who married at Barnstable on 28 November 1644 Samuel Lothrop, son of JOHN LOTHROP {1634, Scituate}. (Donald Lines Jacobus noted that this Hannah Scudder has been incorrectly identified as the daughter of THOMAS SCUDDER {1637, Salem}.)
John Scudder was half-sibling of Samuel Chamberlain of Ipswich and Joanna (Chamberlain) Betts, wife of Richard Betts of Newtown, Long Island.
Elizabeth (Stoughton) (Scudder) Chamberlain, mother of these four siblings, had immigrated to New England by 1644. She was the sister of THOMAS STOUGHTON {1630, Dorchester} and of ISRAEL STOUGHTON {1633, Dorchester}.
John Scudder was the nephew of THOMAS SCUDDER {1637, Salem}.
John Scudder sailed for New England with the family of THOMAS EWER {1635, Charlestown}, who was also from Strood, Kent, although no genealogical connection between the Ewers and the Scudders has been discovered.
Both Savage and Pope mixed together records for this immigrant and his cousin of the same name, son of THOMAS SCUDDER {1637, Salem}.
