Irene D. Cookson, 103, of Quincy, formerly of Plymouth, Illinois, passed away at 1:35 p.m. Thursday (November 19, 2015) in Good Samaritan Home.

Born February 7, 1912 in Clayton Township near Golden, Illinois, she was the daughter of John H. and Agnes Marie Oetting Flesner. Baptized by her grandfather, the Rev. W. J. Oetting in the Evangelical Immanuel Lutheran Church near Golden; then confirmed in the Lutheran Faith by the Rev. William Brockkopp on March 28, 1926.

Irene attended and graduated 8th grade from parochial #16 in Adams County. In 1927, she was honored for writing the highest scoring final exam of all 57 rural schools in Adams County. She graduated from Golden High School in 1931.

On December 18, 1932, Irene married Orin K. Cookson in South Prairie Church near Golden. In 1944, Orin became a Licensed Funeral Director and Irene became a Licensed Funeral Director in 1956. Together they owned and operated their funeral homes and a monument Company in Plymouth and Augusta with their sons, Jerry and Rod, until Orin's death. In 1978, Cookson's purchased Zehender Robinson Stormer Funeral Home in Quincy and sold the funeral homes in Plymouth and Augusta to Jack and Gary Hamilton. Irene stayed in Plymouth and continued helping in the business until her retirement in 1982, when she moved to Quincy.
During her career in funeral service, she played and sang for countless funerals.

She was very active in local civic organizations. She loved music, gardening -- both vegetable and flowers, quilting, painting, reading and collecting antiques were just some of her many hobbies. She was blessed with a beautiful alto voice and sang with the Broadway Chorus and Volunteer Voices well into her nineties. As an accomplished oil painter, she painted wildlife, flowers, covered bridges and sailing ships. Irene's passion was tending to her gardens and taking care of her purple martin bird houses.

Irene was a wonderful wife and mother, who worked hard, lived a Christian life and accomplished much with her friendliness and smile.

Survivors include her son, two daughters-in-law; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two great-great granddaughters; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, a son, three brothers, and six sisters.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning (November 24, 2015) at 10:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Disseler and Pastor George Tomko officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday evening (November 23, 2015) from 3:00 to 6:00 and Tuesday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Home or Faith Lutheran Church in Augusta.
