Opportunities 'stripped away'

United in joy at a wedding on Aug. 26, 2006, the families of Jonathan and Scarlett Parsley Hooker have since shared a year of sorrow.

The deaths of the couple less than 24 hours after their wedding have "just taken our hearts and torn (them) apart," said Gloria Parsley, Scarlett Hooker's mother.

The couple had been on their way to a honeymoon in California when they were killed.

"Life has consisted of sleepless nights, lonely days, and heart-wrenching memories," Kelli Gray, an aunt of Jon Hooker, said in an e-mail.

Yet both families said they've been blessed by their faith in God, and the support of their community in London, where both Hooker and Parsley grew up.

His mother, Kim Hooker, said in an e-mail that someone offers a hug, a pat on the back or "just a kind word" almost daily.

Scarlett Hooker's sister, Johnna Stallo, said it was her sister who gave her the tools to try to cope.

"She gave me a new Bible six months before she died," Stallo said in an e-mail. "She would have told me to go to the Bible to find answers. I have, and that is how I've dealt with this tragedy."

The Hookers said they want to focus on the joy of Aug. 26, 2006, and what might have been.

His sister, Candice Robinson, said she and her husband had looked forward to spending time as couples with her brother and his bride and raising their families together.

"The morning of Aug. 27th stripped away those opportunities," Robinson said in an e-mail.
