MUNCIE--Eleanor M. Smith, 94, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 at Elmcroft Heartland Village after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's.
A lifelong resident of Muncie, Eleanor had been a resident of Heartland Village since Sept. of 2003.
Eleanor was born Oct. 22, 1915, one of our children and the only daughter of Marvin and Chloe Babcock. Eleanor attended Muncie Community Schools and graduated from Muncie Central High School.
Eleanor married Ervin E. "Smittie" Smith on Dec. 4, 1938, and they were married for sixty-three wonderful years before his death in 2002. After their marriage in 1938, Eleanor worked for several years in the Delaware County Clerk's office, and then helped her husband establish Smittie's Men's Shop in the Village. Eleanor was a 59-year member of High Street United Methodist Church, and was married in the High Street Chapel.
Eleanor was an exceptional Bridge player, and belonged to several Bridge clubs over the years along with several of her close and very dear friends. She would always take a break from Bridge during the summer, and spent summers on Lake Tippecanoe from 1950 until her husband's death in 2002.
Survivors include one son, Cary P. "Pat" Smith (wife: Ann) of Gaston; and her grandson, Eli. Also surviving are her younger brother, Don Babcock, of Murphy, North Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Jane Babcock, of Muncie, and Susie Babcock, of Seneca, South Carolina, and several nieces and nephews.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her mother, Chloe Babcock; her father, Marvin, at 104 years of age; her younger brother, Richard "Dick" Babcock, and her older brother, Marvin Babcock, Sr.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff and administration of Elmcroft Heartland Village for the exceptional care and compassion they gate to Eleanor the past several years. "The Girs" always had Eleanor looking very nice. The family would also like to thank State of the Heart Hospice for the wonderful care and assistance they extended to Eleanor and her family over the past several months.
There will be a small private service for the family at a later date to celebrate Eleanor's life and her accomplishments; there will be no calling hours. The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
