ROMAN GOSZ
(1910 - 1966)

Romy Gosz, "Polka King," Dies at Manitowoc At 56

Romy Gosz, known nationally as "the polka king," died early this morning at Memorial Hospital in Manitowoc following a brief illness. He was 56.

A native of Grimms, Manitowoc County, he was born Aug. 2, 1910, the son of the late Paul Gosz and Anna Rank Gosz. That year the family moved to Rockwood where the elder Gosz operated a tavern. The "Polka King" began his musical career at the age of 11 when he played with his father's family orchestra. When he was 18, he formed his own orchestra.

In 1948, Mr. Gosz left Rockwood and moved to Palifka's Corners in Manitowoc County where he operated a tavern. He aspired to national fame in 1946 when he was named the nation's polka king in a Saturday Evening Post article in Coronet Magazine. The following year the Romy Gosz Orchestra made a coast to coast tour. For the past several years the orchestra has appeared daily on the Noon Show on WBAY-TV in Green Bay.

Mr. Gosz married Antoinette Leggio on July 5, 1929, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Francis Creek. He was a member of the National Ballroom Operators, the ZCBJ (national Bohemian organization) Lodge 99 of Palifka's Corners, numerous sportsmen's organizations, the Paternal Order of Eagles, and the Musicians Local No. 195.

Survivors include four sons, Anthony, Thomas and George of Manitowoc and Lloyd of Milwaukee; one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Ramona) Bouril, of Manitowoc; four brothers, Frank and George, of Rockwood, and Michael and Edward of Manitowoc; a sister, Mrs. Kenneth Nelson, of Milwaukee; and 13 grand-children. One brother preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Francis Creek. Friends may call at the Saur Funeral Home in Kellnersville after 3 p.m. Tuesday.

A rosary will be prayed at the funeral home at 8 p.m.
