Catherine Stewart was born on 1 Aug 1780 in Foss, Perthshire, Scotland. At age 6, she immigrated in 1786 with her parents, Robert Stewart, Jane Wilson, and her oldest siblings to Johnstown, Montgomery (now Fulton), New York.
Catherine, her parents and siblings settled on their new farm in Johnstown, a family that grew to 12 children. Her father's cousin Neil Stewart and his family went 70 miles west to Smithfield Township, Madison County, New York. Catherine married Neil's son Robert at the Presbyterian Church of Johnstown on 25 Jan 1804. He took his new bride to Smithfield, where they farmed near his father and siblings.
Seven children were born to Robert and Catherine over the next 20 years, Jane, James, Jennett, Christie Ann, Margaret, Robert and Daniel. All were born in the part of Smithfield, Madison County, that became Fenner on 22 Apr 1823. Of the daughters, only Jennett married, to Archibald Smith. Son Robert married Charlotte Van Valkenburg, son James married Elizabeth Clark, and son Daniel married Ann.
Catherine became ill and went home to her parents in Johnstown, where she died on the 8 May 1824 at age 43. She is buried in Johnstown in the Colonial Cemetery right next to her parents.
Surviving his 1st wife 30 years, husband Robert married again, Lucy May on 30 Mar 1830 in Fennor, Madison, New York. Robert died 10 Jun 1854 and was buried in the Peterboro Cemetery in Peterboro, Madison County.
