Conduct Final Rites Here Wednesday For Mrs. W. S. GILES, 75
Pioneer Resident of Section Who Died Tuesday Interred Near Lone Oak Wednesday Final rites were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the family residence on Caddo street for Mrs. Agnes GILES 75, prominent Commerce lady who passed away at her home Tuesday afternoon following a several days' serious illness. The remains were taken overland to Sullivan Cemetery, near Lone Oak, where interment was made only a short distance from the site where this pioneer Texas woman was born.
The deceased was well and favorably known by many people in the Commerce section, who join with the Journal in offering sincere condolences to the bereaved survivors in the tragic passing of their loved one. While her death was not altogether expected the children having been summoned to her bedside when physicians expressed the opinion that she could not survive an attack which struck her Friday, it came as a shock to many who mourn the passing of one of Texas' oldest residents, known for her service to humanity. She was born at Lone Oak May 17, 1860, the daughter of William and Virgie Milsap Chaffin, and has resided in this area since that time. She was united in marriage with W. S. Giles December 19, 1878, at Lone Oak, and to this happy union three children were born. Mrs. Giles' husband preceded her in death five years ago. She had been a member of the Christian Church for the past 45 years, and had worked diligently and faithfully in the Master's service since embracing Him as her Savior.
The Rev. W.W. Freeman conducted the last sad rites here. Pall bearers were E. K. Freeze, T. R. Young, L. E. Fuller, Earl Sandridge, W.W. Rogers, and Dave Young.
Surviving Mrs. Giles are three children, Mrs. George Sayle, Commerce, Dr. Upton Giles, New Orleans, La., and Mrs. Frank Campbell, Freeport, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. A. F. Richter, Greenville; a brother, Ben Chaffin, Mena, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Upton Sayle of Commerce and Dr. W. Frank Sayle, Upton Giles, Jr. and Ann Giles of New Orleans, La., three great grandchildren, Betty Ann, Wilma June and Dorothy Jane Sayle, all of New Orleans, La.
