He was a Congressional Medal for Bravery recipient in the War of 1812, Commander in the Mexican War, and a manufacturer of firearms. He came to Pennsylvania before the War of 1812, at the beginning of the war he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was a cannoneer on the USS Niagra. During his term of service, he was in Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's fleet, taking part in the celebrated naval battle of Lake Erie and for bravery, he was awarded the Congressional Medal for Bravery by the United States Government. After the war he turned his attention to the gunsmith's trade, at which he worked until 1846.when he organized Company H, Fourth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, of which he was made Captain, where he lead the Indiana troops in the Mexican War. They fought the Mexicans in several engagements. This Company consisted mostly of soldiers from Vigo County, Indiana and was called the Fort Harrison Guards. He was mustered into the 4th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Company H on 12 June 1847 at Jeffersonville, Indiana by Captain R. C. Gatlin and mustered out 16 July 1848 at Madison, Indiana by Major H. A. Goff. He manufactured firearms in Brownsville Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania from 1818 to 1826.
