Mr. Donald "Coach" Ernewein passed away peacefully on March 24, 2012, just six weeks short of his 90th birthday... although he insisted that he had already reached that milestone. Don always preferred to be early, rather than just on time.

Don was the first baby born at the Red Cross Hospital in Dryden, Ontario on May 6, 1922. He left Dryden at the age of 17 full of ambition, venturing to Port Arthur where he managed a grocery store, then owned and operated a taxi and trucking business. In 1955 he returned to Dryden for a few years where he operated the Husky Service Station. Don returned to Fort William where he was employed by the Ministry of Transportation as a Highway Carrier Inspector until his retirement. Don's passion for cars and trucks led him to become a school bus driver and an avid car salesman.

He had a love of singing, dancing, telling stories (repeatedly), reciting poetry that he learned in grade school, bowling, camping and going to the casino. Everyone who met him quickly became acquainted with his sense of humour which remained with him until the end.

Don is survived by his children Donna Gill of Toronto, Donald "Spike" (Barb) of Dallas, Texas, Christine Rivers and Mary Barlow, both of Toronto; grandchildren Cathy Gill of Canmore, Alberta, Heather Gill of Brisbane, Australia and John (Cheryl) Wilson of St. John's Newfoundland; his special friend of many years, June Adduono and her children Wendy, Rob and Dixie. He will also be remembered by his brother Claire (Esther) of Dryden; Natalia Ernewein of Aurora; his two "adopted" daughters Sheila Siegfried and Anita Hull and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Predeceased by his parents Joseph and Mary Isabel; brothers Francis and George (Peggy).

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 30, 2012 with family and friends gathering in St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church (corner of Mary and Brown Street) for the Funeral Mass at 12:10PM celebrated by Father James Panikulam. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00PM until 8:00PM in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or a charity of your choice.
