Geroge Arnold was born in Stein Am Rhein, Switzerland on July 3, 1837. He enlisted in Company B on April 29, 1861. He was 5' 3 3/4" tall, had a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. For the first two months of his enlistment he trained and was then shipped to Ft Ridgely, northwest of New Ulm. He left with his regiment for Washington DC, via steamboat, from Ft Snelling on June 21, 1861. In his diary, written in German, he noted that President Lincoln visited the camp of the First Minnesota on July 8, 1862.
George was wounded in the right arm, near the shoulder, and the left leg, below the knee, during the regiment's charge at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. After the battle, he lay in the field hospital next to his comrade, Morris Erhardt, who had been wounded in the ankle during the charge. Here doctors extracted a bullet from his left leg.
He was hospitalized for a long time and never did completely recover from his wounds. He suffered from amnesia for awhile and didn't know who he was. Only when he came marching home with the regiment did his family find out that he was still alive. He was discharged with the regiment on May 5, 1864, after having participated in 13 major engagements.
George died in Eden Valley, Mn, on Sept 22, 1903, at the age of 66.
